DARE TO MAKE THE CHANGE (Joel 2:1-11)

Fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ (i.e. the fulfillment of the feast of Passover and First fruits), the Holy Spirit was released (i.e. the fulfillment the feast of Pentecost) upon mankind forever. The first set of people to receive Him were 120 in the upper room, they turned their world upside down, Acts 17:6”…these that have turned the world upside down are come hither also”; Peter their leader, preached a sermon and 3000 souls was added to the church. An exponential growth of 25% in just one meeting! You can imagine the number of congregation multiplied by 25 each meeting! The second sermon, 5000 souls were added to the church. Miracles, signs and wonders began to follow and the church multiplied greatly; Acts 6:7”And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith”. They didn’t stop there until almost the whole city gathered to hear the word, Acts 13:44”And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God”. (If you are criticizing large gathering of God’s children, you are actually criticizing the move of God). The first church set the tone for revival on earth. Acts 19:20”So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed”.
The baton of modern day revival can be traced to the Azuza street revival of 1906, led by a one eyed Blackman; William J Seymour. This took place in Los Angeles, California. He was a man committed to prayer, it was recorded that it was his intense prayers and the few people who believed in his preaching that prayed down the presence and power of the Holy Ghost. There were undeniable proofs of God’s presence and power in the meetings under this man as many miracles, signs and wonders happen, chiefly was people been baptized in the Holy Ghost. From there many churches branched out with the fire of the Holy Ghost. So great was the fire that the whole world reverberated through it.
The Holy Spirit moved the revival fire across the Atlantic to Nigeria in 1930. The man God used was Joseph Ayo Babalola. A man not reckoned with in church hierarchy but whom God by-passed protocol to us. So great was the anointing upon this man that people from other nations around the world came to witness his ministry. Evangelist D O Babajide of blessed memory, who was one of the direct lieutenants of Apostle Babalola, recant of some strange stories and events that happened under the Apostle’s ministry. He mentioned an incident of when Apostle Babalola fasted for forty-three days without eating or drinking anything! Babalola could pray for days nonstop, and when he finishes, they would be telling him what day it was and not what he thought. He founded many prayer mountains in the South-West of Nigeria with many physical signs still present on some of those mountains till today and the covenants still speaking till today. Among his lieutenants were Pa Akindayomi, Orekoya, Babajide, and others who branched the revival fire out.
In our time and generation, we see men like late Arch Bishop Benson Idahosa, Pastor E A Adeboye, Pastor Kumuyi and Dr Oyedepo already spreading the revival fire. Idahosa was a powerful revivalist that took Benin City like storm. He silenced witches and wizards and even cancelled the world meeting slated for Benin at that time. He preached the gospel across the ocean to many races before his demise. Pastor E A Adeboye was ranked the 49th most influenctial man out of fifty in the whole world some years back and his profile is still rising till now. Redeemed Christian Church of God which he pastor has branches in more than 200 nations of the world. Any country he sets in, he receives presidential reception. The queen of England was awed when she saw the crowd that went to one of his crusade in England. She was quoted to say she has never seen such crowd before. Dr David Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel has been used tremendously by God. It has a large following of members and known ministers of the gospel. What of Pastor Sunday Adelaja? He has the single largest church in Europe, situated in Ukraine; a communist country. He plays a vital role in the economy of that country both spiritually and physically. What do all these men whom God used and is using have in common? They were irrevocably and doggedly committed to God. God was God overall in their lives. They were completely sold out to Him.
Acts 14:17”Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness”. God is still in the business of empowering men to spread the revival fire, but He will never enlist every Tunde, Chidi or Adamu except those that are tested and trusted. In every generation, He raises men to carry on the fire of revival; He does not look for readymade men but available men. You must be ready to burn the bridge as you cross over to His service and also sacrifice all for the sake of the gospel.
What does God look for in a vessel?
1) Consecration: this is when an individual deliberately set his/herself apart for God and for His holy purpose. It examines a life of denying oneself and waiting upon the Lord in fasting, praying and studying the word. It is a life of discipline and even staying away from loved ones and things we love. It is not a once and for all exercise but a life time dedication to God.
2) Anointing: without the anointing of the Holy Ghost, we are no match for the devil. In fact Jesus asked His disciples to wait till they received the Holy Ghost and power. God want us to be leaders that gets results and makes impact in our world. Neither education nor special skills or ability will give us the needed power except the Holy Ghost. What usually follows consecration in the life of any person is power.
3) Humility: sincerely showing that you do not think that you are as important as other people but that you are ready to serve humanity without ulterior motives. Anybody who wants to remain in God’s reckoning must be humble before Him.
4) Diligence: this is working hard with carefulness in given direction. Proverbs 22:29”Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men”.
5) Perseverance: this is the quality of trying and continuing to achieve a particular goal or aim despite difficulties. When you are on a given task, whether divine or self appointed, and you meet with great difficulties/obstacles, the only option is to develop a strong persevering spirit, that is the only way you can fulfill in life. Fighting the good fight of faith 1Timothy 6:12, taking the shield of faith Ephesians 6:16 and holding on in faith Romans 4:18-19 are all forms of perseverance.
Many men of God have rearranged Matthew 6:33 to mean “seek ye first the worldly things and its pleasure, then the kingdom of God shall be added unto you”. But as many that are ready to abide by the word in truth that “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” are the people God is ever ready to empower to bear the burden of the gospel.
