In His earthly ministry, Jesus used many practical things to convene the message of the kingdom of God to the people. In our text today, He uses agricultural terms to pass His message across. Jesus said He is the vine V1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman”. In this chapter, Jesus elevated the status of the disciples from servants to friends and He began to address them as shareholders in the kingdom of God. The branches of any tree rely totally on the vine for nourishment, support and productivity. Jesus called His disciples now turned friends, His branches. Jesus highlighted the role of God; the husbandman V2 “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit”.
For the branch to remain fruitful, it must not be cut off from the vine. Jesus said for them to be fruitful they must abide in Him and not only abide but His words must abide in them too. Without Jesus, they can of their own do nothing. His disciples heeded these great encouraging words and they were fruitful too in their earthly ministry.
The same word has come to us too today. to be fruitful in life, we must always remember that we are only branches and we need the vine i.e. Jesus not only to be fruitful but to survive as well. Many people run the race of life independent of God, while some achieve, some do not. It is a hard fact that any success recorded outside of God doesn’t last, the more reason we have to be totally reliant on God. the natural system teaches us to be independent of other people but the spiritual is the opposite; total reliance on God is the key.
With God in your life, victory is guaranteed, trust Him today and commit totally to Him. Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass”.
Prayer point: I decide today to trust in the Lord totally in Jesus name.
