HIDDEN IDOLS (Ezekiel 14:1-11)

In the Old Testament, it was very easy to recognize when someone has strayed into idolatry because there will be a physical representation of the idol whom the person worshipped. Unlike our times now that people engage in diverse form of idolatry but is hidden from the physical eyes; this kind of idolatry is in the heart which is far dangerous than the afore mentioned. Because it is hidden, people still carry these idols into God’s presence.

V1-3 “Now some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them”? These were no ordinary men that came to the prophet and they had idols in their hearts but the Lord that searches the heart knows the content of their hearts. The exact situation of the hearts was revealed to Ezekiel, there were strong warnings that followed and God called them to repentance to forsake the idols in their hearts.

Psalm 66:18 “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear”. Whatever you give more attention than God in your life is an idol. Sadly in our present time, money is a god to many people. The only other god that Jesus warned us against is money: Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” also Luke 16:13. The reason why some pastors came into ministry was for pecuniary gains. Many are hirelings and not shepherd because money is their motivating factor. I have heard pastors determined honorarium to be collected if they are to honour invitations. Many people are running tirelessly after money and it is controlling their lives. They find it difficult to give out of their substances. To some, food is their god, football/betting, while some it is strange sinful addictions.

Do not try to make excuses for yourself now, come plain before God, allow the Holy Spirit minister to you. What you waited upon the Lord for and received, the manifestation must not become a god in your life. Determine to change cry to Him to help you see these things for what they are and not gods.

Prayer point: I uproot by fire, every root of idolatry in my life in Jesus name.
