SALT AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD (Matthew 5:13-16)

Salt is a crystalline chemical compound, small white crystals consisting of majorly sodium chloride. It is a substance used as sweetener for food and also used as preservative. Salt is an important ingredient when it comes to cooking, a food cooked without the taste of salt will not be delicious and it will not be desired to be eaten. Also salts are used as preservative for food items like meat, fish, vegetables etc. salt’s presence in the food item will never allow the growth of bacteria that decomposes food.

It is natural that where there is light, darkness cannot stay there. Light is irrelevant until when darkness is experienced. The brightness of a light bulb is not appreciated until when it is night. Naturally everyone crave light in any form available when night creeps in.

Jesus likened Christians to salt and light which according to the definitions given above is what a Christian should actually be in life. Isaiah 60:1-3 “Arise, shine for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising”. Jesus is our source of light and we are meant to reflect Him for the world to see. Jesus is our prototype and we are His carbon copy. While Jesus was here on earth, “went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” Acts 10:38. And He said in john 14:12 that greater works than what He did we will do. Thick darkness has covered the peoples and they need to be liberated because we are the salt of the world and by the light we bring. When you reflect the light of Christ, people will come to your brightness.

However it becomes an aberration when the person that should bring light is himself in darkness. V13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men”. Doo a self appraisal of yourself today, check your spiritual life and see whether you are still a good salt lightening the darkness of the world. Paul said “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall”.

Prayer point: Father Lord help me not to lose my spiritual values in Jesus name.
