As little children we were taught in the sunbeam that God accepted Abel’s sacrifice because he offered a good sheep while Cain’s sacrifice was rejected because they were rotten. That is not the total truth at least.

V 3-5 “And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell”. According to the scripture, the personality behind the sacrifice was first considered by God, before He saw the sacrifice; God accepted Abel first and then his offering but rejected Cain and then his sacrifice.

Your offering or sacrifice is not so important to God as you, to Him. He is more concerned about who brought the offering and not the offering itself. Jesus echoed the same thing in Matthew 5:23-24 “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift”.

The quality or volume of your offering does not move God, your life is what He sees, we can never bribe Him. Psalms 24:4 “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully”. Approach His presence according to His terms then you and your offering will be accepted by Him.
